(Click on an image to view larger size) The sauropod dinosaurs were the largest animals ever to roam the Earth. These gigantic creatures had extremely elongated necks that projected some thirty feet from the shoulders. Some researchers have calculated that pumping blood up such a great distance to the brain would have demanded a huge 1.6 ton heart. Other scientists speculate that sauropods had several hearts which all worked as a relay team to drive blood to the brain. One of the heaviest of the sauropods, Brachiosaurus, weighed up to 77 tons, heavier than the weight of ten elephants.
