Now that we have finished up 1997 (except for taxes and a few other projects), we are looking forward to a new year filled with challenges and opportunities. Although the next few months will not be conducive to a lot of outdoor digging, there are still many bones in the lab that need to be prepared, and hopefully, everyone will be able to put a little work in preparing some of the bones that were excavated last year.
If you have some time to spend in the lab, John Bird announces that the lab will be open on Wednesday evenings beginning January 14th. Any UFOP members are invited to come to the lab from 7:00 to 9:00 PM to help in preparing bones that have been excavated from Site 23, the CEM site and the Yellow Cat quarry.
It would be helpful to John if you could call him at the lab (637-2021 Ext. 5645) or leave a message for him at the CEU Museum (637-5060). Let him know that you are coming and how long you plan to stay. John says that if you want to start as early as 6:00 PM, he will try to accommodate you.
This is one job where you do not need experience. Just show up and someone will be there to help get you started and show you what to do. This is a great way to spend a couple of hours with some new friends and some old fossils as well.
Remember that to obtain your first or second level of certification that you need to have a certain number of hours working in the lab.
This lab time will continue every Wednesday through the month of March. See you there!
It is with sorrow that we learned of an automobile accident in Spanish Fork Canyon on December 21, that took the life of one of our chapter members. Mary Jane Gerrard-Lee and her son Edan were driving through the canyon when Mary Jane was involved in an accident that took her life. Her son Edan was not seriously injured in the accident.
At the time of her death, Mary Jane was directing the Helper Mining and Railroad Museum in Helper , Utah. At a memorial service held in her honor, many words were expressed regarding her competence and thoroughness in her work at the museum.
The same can be said of her work with both the local chapter of UFOP and with the State UFOP Organization. Just shortly before her untimely death, Mary Jane had, with other volunteers, helped organize the Chapter Christmas social. Mary Jane had gone the extra mile in not only helping organize and decorate for the social, but had also made a gingerbread house that was given as a door prize.
Mary Jane had served with the local chapter and had also served as President of the State Organization during the 1996 - 1997 year. She had worked many hours, often behind the scenes, to further the goals of the organization.
She had also helped plan and carry out a state wide convention, and had recently volunteered to co-edit the newsletter. Her smile and helping hands will be missed. We extend condolences to her family and loved ones at this time.
You are probably aware that the Chapter dues are now on an annual January first through December thirty first basis. Members joining during the middle or latter part of the year were assessed partial dues to cover only part of the year with the full dues being due in January of 1998. While you have this Newsletter in your hand, won=t you find your check book and send a check to cover the cost of your 1998 dues to the chapter treasurer, Jim Huffaker. Dues can be sent to Jim at: PO Box 5984 CEU Campus, Price, Utah 84501.
Dues should be sent in the amount of:
FAMILY MEMBERSHIP $20
INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP $15
STUDENT MEMBERSHIP $10
Please send your dues with the enclosed dues payment form. Thank you!
There is a limited number of tee shirts left over from the booth that was set up by the state UFOP organization at the Geological Society of America annual meeting in Salt Lake City last year. We will have these at the Chapter meeting in January for those who might be interested in buying one. The shirt has the UFOP logo in red and black on a cream colored shirt. Come to the meeting and we will make you an offer too good to pass up.
If there are members who are not able to attend the meeting, but who would like shirts, contact us at the chapter address and if there is enough interest, we will try to obtain more shirts. If there is enough interest and we are able to obtain more shirts, they will cost $9 with postage and handling included in that price.
Clark Warren announces that a statewide UFOP certification committee meeting will be held this month to work on finalizing certification requirements for the Level I and Level II certification. At this meeting, the certification committee will review and discuss the certification program and work on finalizing the requirements for these two certification levels. If you have any questions or input you would like to share with Clark on this topic, he would appreciate hearing from you prior to the meeting which is scheduled to be held on January 12, 1998.
The committee has spent many hours working on these requirements and feels that everything is in Anear final@ form. It is gratifying to know that these certification requirements will soon be finalized and each UFOP member will be able to work toward being certified at the appropriate level.
(All the more reason to get over to the bone lab and log more hours which will be required for certification at both levels.)
The next chapter meeting will be held at the CEU Museum on January 13, 1998 at 7:00 PM. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Paul Bybee who is with the Department of Science at Utah Valley State College. We are looking forward to this being an informative evening.
Put February Meeting On Your Schedule
Our February meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10. Our guest speaker will be Ken Stadtman who will talk to us about the work that is being done at the Dalton Wells Site near Moab. Be sure to put this on your calendar.
We know there must be some members out there who have kids in the family who are interested in paleontology. For these kids (16 and younger) we have a contest. As prizes for this contest, we have three super cool dinosaur sculptures. They are made of wood and can be assembled in a model of a dinosaur skeleton.
A
How can I enter the contest?@ You ask. We are looking for the most creative, imaginative and little bit crazy reason that the dinosaurs may have become extinct about 65 million years ago. We know the real reason was that they started smoking cigarettes when they were young and this caused them to die an early death. You probably have better reasons for their extinction than this. Write your brief explanation and send it to:UFOP
P.O.Box 5984
CEU Campus
Price, Utah, 84501
Include a drawing if you like. The contest will end on January 31, 1998. Entries will be judged at our chapter meeting in February and dinosaur sculptures will be sent to the three persons (16 and younger) submitting the best responses. Put on your thinking caps and see what kind of explanations you can come up with.
As always, we invite you to submit any items you feel might be fitting for the newsletter. (Remember, it is a family type publication.) Anything related to paleontology including cartoons, stories, items of interest.
Also, if you have a paleontology related question, we will try to find an answer for you from among the experts who belong to the chapter.
We look forward to hearing from you !
