1999 Annual State Convention

The annual state convention will be hosted this year by the Salt Lake Chapter. They are making plans and will soon be announcing the location of the meeting and the activities they are planning for the chapters throughout the state. They would like you to know that the dates for the convention this year will be May 21, 22 and 23. (Friday. Saturday and Sunday) They are planning a variety of activities that will be of interest to all.

Mark these dates on your calendar and plan to join with UFOP members from throughout the state. Additional information will be sent out as soon as possible. This convention is one of the highlights of the year so be sure to attend.

March and April Chapter Meetings

We are pleased to have Michelle Fleck from the College of Eastern Utah as our guest lecturer for our March and April meetings. Michelle and her husband and children are all UFOP members.

As you may be aware, one of the requirements for level 2 certification is to complete a course in rock and mineral identification. Michelle will be presenting the information you will need in order to complete this certification requirement. The classes will be held on the regular meeting nights.... Tuesday, the 9th of March and Tuesday, the 13th of April.

PLEASE NOTE: the meetings will be held in room #118 in the Science Building on the CEU Campus rather than at our usual location, and will last for 1 2 hours.

It will probably be some time before this course will be repeated, so be sure to attend if you are interested in your level 2 certification. Even if you do not need this class for certification, it will be an informative and interesting class. If you have ever taken a class from Michelle, you know that she is a first class instructor and will give you a lot of information in an easily learned and delightful way. We are looking forward to having Michelle with us in March and April.

We should also note that the minutes from last months meeting listed the wrong persons as having furnished the tasty refreshments. They were actually furnished by Michelle and her children. We are not sure whether Ken had anything to do with them, but they were good refreshments and the little gummy dinosaurs added a nice touch. Thanks to the Flecks!

Bone Lab Open

A good group of UFOP members came to our monthly meeting in February. Everyone was able to see some of the "behind the scenes" areas of the lab as well as work on some of the bones. A variety of activities were enjoyed, ranging from cleaning bones to putting them together with bondo, and everything in between. Chapter secretary Carol Michael happily reported that no one super glued their fingers to a bone. It was an enjoyable evening for those who attended.

For those who were not able to attend, we remind you that the lab is open every Wednesday evening from 7 to 9:00 p.m. If you plan to go, it would be helpful if you would call John Bird at the lab or the museum and let him know you are coming so he can have some bones ready for you to work on.

Pre-history Week

Save the week of April 30 through May 8 for Pre-History Week activities. This year a number of events are being planned. The annual Dinofest will be held on Friday April 30th. This is always a great event!. In addition to an excellent meal, there will be an auction of many items of interest to all paleontologists and archaeologists. (And even normal people)

On May 1st, there will be activities in Nine Mile Canyon relating to the archaeology of the canyon.

On May 4th, our regular meeting of the Castle Valley chapter of UFOP will host a paleontology lecture. ( Note that this is one week earlier than our usual meeting.)

On May 6th, the local USAS chapter will sponsor an archaeology lecture.

Ferron Canyon will be the site of the activities to be held on the 7th of May, and then the week will end with family day activities at the museum.

You will be receiving a flyer with more details of the weeks events in the near future. In the meantime, put this week on your calendar and invite your friends and relatives from around the state to come join us for this week of activities. There are a lot of fun and interesting things to do in Castle Country.
