New Officers

One of the items of business at our monthly chapter meeting in April was the election of new officers to lead us through the coming year. Byron Ray, who was acting as president due to the resignation of the previous president, is the chapter president for the coming year. Duane Taylor, a staff member of the CEU Museum, and long time UFOP supporter was elected president elect and will assume duties as president in 1999.

Carol Michael is our new secretary and is excited about being involved with the chapter leadership. Rodger Crowe who works at Southeast Paint and Wall covering when he is not searching for bones, will serve as the chapter treasurer, and Barbara Warren will replace her husband Clark, as the historian. Come to one of our next chapter meetings and look at the set of scrapbooks that Clark and Barbara are putting together. They have compiled a wonderful collection of items covering the history of the Raptor Chapter since it was formed.

Anyone who has articles, photographs, or other items of historical interest are invited to submit them to Barbara for inclusion in this history.

Right after the election, the new officers met and organized committees to take care of chapter business. We hope that when the call comes, you will be willing to help serve on a committee. We need help to arrange programs, provide refreshments for our meetings, write and mail the newsletter and to arrange for summer field trips. If you haven=t heard from us yet, be patient. The call will come.

If you have suggestions, new ideas, requests, please feel free to contact any of the new officers. We welcome your input.

Thanks to Old Officers

Having served as president for nearly the past year, I have been impressed with the dedicated service that has been given by our past officers. There was always someone willing to support projects, and to volunteer their time and effort to get the job done. Barbara Warren and Joan Taylor have worked as a team to get the newsletter duplicated and mailed. Their efforts are appreciated. Barbara has also done a great job arranging programs for the past year.

It seems that refreshments would magically appear for each chapter meeting. I would often head for the meeting and think that I should have called someone to arrange for refreshments, but they were always there. Thank you Gail Raby for your help in providing us with a treat each month. I am still wondering where the green, yellow and pink florescent cookies came from for our last meeting. No one checked, but they probably glowed in the dark.

Jim Huffaker has done a great job keeping the books for us and has kept the mailing list current as members come and go. Thanks, Jim.

Thanks also to Joan Taylor, who was there each month to keep thorough minutes of our meetings and type them up for inclusion in our newsletter.

Thanks also to Clark Warren for his work in starting to compile the history of the chapter. There is a lot of information in files, un-mounted photographs, articles, newsletters and reports that has been pulled together by Clark. He can take a well deserved rest now that he has handed the job of historian over to his wife,
Barbara.

It has been a pleasure for me to work with these people and with others who have planned digs, field trips and helped to keep the group going.

I know I have probably omitted names of others who should have special recognition for their efforts, please forgive me and know that even though your name is not listed, your efforts are appreciated.

A special thanks is also given to those people who have shared their expertise with us at our monthly meetings. We have had some great programs this past year and look forward to more in the future

This coming year should be an exciting one. We have some tentative field trips planned, and will soon be out in the field. It has been a meaningful experience for me to associate with you and to become better acquainted with many of you. Although I only know some of you through the mailing list, I hope you will be able to join us at some time or another in the future. Thanks to all!!

Byron N. Ray

May Chapter Meeting

PLEASE NOTE!!

Because we are holding it in conjunction with Pre-history week, our May meeting will be a week earlier than normal. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 1998 at the CEU Museum classroom. Our featured speaker will be Dr. Brooks Britt, who is coming from western Colorado to speak to us about A High Feeders and Low Browsers of the Cretaceous@. This should be an enjoyable evening for all who attend.

Pre-history Week

As you receive this newsletter, Pre- history week will be in full swing. Hopefully you will be able to join in on some of the activities. For those who are unable to be with us, we will try to give you a report in the next newsletter.

Jim Says 'Thanks'

Recently, member Jim Huffaker was working at the Cleveland Quarry and took a few minutes to search for one of the nearby sites. He found the site and on his way back went across a slope composed of bentonite clay. We all know how slick that clay can be if it is wet, and Jim found out the hard way that under the dry appearing top, this clay was pretty slick. Jim slipped, and unfortunately broke his leg in three places. He was able to make it back to his vehicle and drive to the Cleveland Lloyd Quarry where he was able to get help getting to the hospital where he stayed for a few days.

We recently received a thank you card from Jim expressing thanks for flowers, calls and visits from fellow UFOP members while in the hospital and during his recovery at home.

When something happens unexpectedly like this, it is unfortunate, but hopefully it can help each of us re-evaluate our emergency plans. Do we have a cellular phone or some other way to make contact with home? Do others know where we are headed? Jim, more than anyone has probably been thinking of these things. Maybe we can get him to write an article on how we can get out of trouble, or perhaps keep out of trouble.

Anyway, Jim, we are glad that things worked out for you and we look forward to your being with us soon.

E-mail Anyone?

As we are preparing to send out a membership list to everyone, the thought occurs that many members have access to e-mail. This is a great way for members to be in contact with one another. If you would like to include your e-mail address with the membership list, please send it to Byron Ray ( bnray@juno.com ) If we get it within the next couple of weeks, we will include it in your address when we send out the next address list in the near future.
